Sociologists say that a particular rite of passage, backpacking through Europe, furthers the maturation process of college students. For the fortunate few, where the travel is nothing more than the lure of copious amounts of alcohol, sun, and Amsterdam, life hasn’t begun to be complete without it. Either way, all face the same question: what to take?
Backpack – Getting In Touch With Your Inner Mule -How do you pick a good travel backpack? You want to stay in the middle ground, somewhere between the not really necessary $10,000 Himalaya Turbo Pack, and the $12 blue light special.
Follow this method to make the best travel decision. First, attain in whatever way you see fit, from whoever you see fit, be it neighbors, friends or enemies, three yellow page phone books. Then, go to your local sporting goods store. Pick out your choices of rigs, stuff the phone books inside, adjust for your comfort and walk around. This next step might make the store clerks nervous, but break out into a run, to get a good feel for it.
2. Use connecting flights instead of non-stop flights. Once more, now is a great time to do a little study and seek out the places you can get a connecting plane from the U.S. to any place in Europe.
What to Take - There are a few mantras that every person should chant before packing for Europe.
Let us slowly and clearly chant together,
5. Trains and buses. These may add hours, days, or even weeks to your travel time. Yet, if money is the main concern these would not hurt to consider. Landing near a train station or long bus route to take to your final destination, a plus is the scenery in between.
6. Make sure to figure out the slow days. Most of the time there are fewer travelers on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. Take advantage of that fact and plan your European vacation for less money. Besides, there isn’t a difference if you get there on a Sunday or a Tuesday, is there?
7. Go home on slow days. Taking arrival days a step further, you can save even more on the travel expense if you plan to leave for home on Tuesday or Thursday (slow days).
8. Reservations should always be made as far ahead as possible. Except for choosing your seat, you can book cheap plane tickets two to three weeks before the plane is scheduled to leave.
9. Buy round trip tickets because it costs less than one-way seats.
10. Be aggressive and ask if there are lower rtes. Most of the time all you have to do is ask, and there may be a lower fare. You never know until you try it.
For female travelers and, okay, the occasional male,
12. Pay with your time. By informing the airport that you can be bumped to the next flight, you could get a discounted flight at the expense of waiting for the next plane to be ready,
1. Find people who changed their mind at the last minute and buy their tickets at a bargain price. The only problem is that your passport must match the ticket name, solve this either through a ticket agent or matching names.
2. Try seeing if there are any disabled passengers on the plane and see if they want some help. In exchange, they might offer to pay part of your ticket costs.
Resourceful backpackers will send items away (nice things to people you like, particularly smelly/discolored/toxic clothing to people you hate), or just throw items away. Either way, following these practical guidelines will give you a happy experience.
