The Great Ocean Walk
There's a section between Apollo Bay and Princetown where the Great Sea Road curves inland. It's a place of opportunity, the deviation of two trails, will you stay on the road, or park your campervan hire australia vehicle and traverse the terrain where autos cannot go, which one will you choose?
The Great Ocean Walk offers a few options to accommodate all visitors. The causal day hiker can select sections of the walk to go to or the eager back-packer can travel each step of the 64.62 miles of trail. The world renowned walk starts in Apollo Bay and cancels at Glenample. Depending on fitness level, weather conditions and spring in your step, the entire journey could take 5 to 10 days.
Advanced planning is needed to secure a site at the hike-in campsites along the trail. A camping permit is necessary through Parks Victoria, with a minimum 2 week advance notice required. Accommodations at the camp sites include a sheltered picnic table area, tent pads, composting toilets and rainwater reserve tanks. Carrying drinking water is necessary, and additional can be purchased on the way.
All your senses will be engaged as you explore this hypnotizing trail, which is broken into 8 sections, with seven sections terminating at a hike-in campsites. Experience the remoteness of Blanket Bay and Point Franklin and then take a step back in history as you visit the lighthouse at Cape Otway. There are occasions to view Australian wildlife including koalas, kangaroos and wallabies on the ground, while the sky is graced with Kookaburras, Yellow Tail Black Cockatoos and Crimson Rosellas.
During June thru October the majestic Southern Right Whales occupy the ocean while they birth their young. There are a few cascading waterfalls, over 100 predicted in the Otways area, that are famous for their beauty. Walk, explore and wonder as nature exposes her beauty to you and replenishes your soul in the act. Paradise awaits you, on your own, or with a guide; The Great Ocean Walk is an expedition of a lifetime.
