Visit Fitzroy River Crossing
Heading to the west from Kununurra and on the way to Broome, you may come to the Fitzroy River and Fitzroy River Crossing. Once again you will be pleased you decided to travel with Campervan Hire Australia, because in and around this sleepy little town are some impressive things to see. Fitzroy River Crossing is located in the western Kimberleys and is surrounded by rich pastoral land which in effect , are the floodplains of the Fitzroy River.
The town itself still keeps some of the original buildings such as the police station and the old post office which has since been converted into backpacker accommodation. The first causeway is also still there as is a little footbridge over Brooking Creek to the first cemetery. There's also a fascinating avenue of boab trees in the city.
The town itself is a typical outback, bush town with it's own unique characteristics. If you stay for few days to explore the surrounding areas, there is the choice to either camp or stay at the Fitzroy Stream Hotel, or bunk in with the back-packers. The town site was selected thanks to the proximity to the best place to ford the Fitzroy brook.
Things to see include the spectacular Geikie Gorge State Park which was carved out by the Fitzroy River over 350 million years ago, through a limestone reef in ancient times. It has been advised that a 20 kilometre wide reef ran for over 1,000 kilometres from Kununurra, north to Derby then around to Fitzroy Crossing. Geikie Gorge, Tunnel Stream and Windjana Gorge were all formed as a consequence of millions of years of brook erosion.
It actually is worth staying at Fitzroy Crossing solely to see the spectacular gorge formations and the wildlife, fish and birds that inhabit them. Bush walking is a good way to explore these wonders close. Tunnel Stream is a naturally formed tunnel through a limestone reef, being 750 metres long, 12 metres high and 15 metres wide. It is actually spectacular as well as unique.
