Visit Fitzroy River Crossing
Heading due west from Kununurra and on the way to Broome, you will come to the Fitzroy Stream and Fitzroy River Crossing. Once more you'll be pleased you decided to travel with Campervan Hire Australia, because in and around this knackered tiny town are some spectacular things to see. Fitzroy River Crossing is located in the western Kimberleys and is enclosed by rich pastoral land which actually are the floodplains of the Fitzroy River.
The city itself still retains some of the original buildings eg the police station and the old post office which has since been converted into back-packer accommodation. The original causeway is also still there as is a little footbridge over Brooking Stream to the original graveyard. There is also an interesting avenue of boab trees in the town.
The city itself is a standard outback, bush town with it's own unique traits. If you stay for few days to explore the near by areas, there's the choice to either camp or stay at the Fitzroy Brook Inn, or bunk in with the backpackers. The town site was selected due to the vicinity to the most acceptable place to ford the Fitzroy brook.
Things to see include the impressive Geikie Gorge National Park which was chipped out by the Fitzroy Stream over 350 million years ago, thru a limestone reef in traditional times. It has been suggested that a 20 kilometre wide reef ran for more than 1,000 kilometres from Kununurra, north to Derby then around to Fitzroy Crossing. Geikie Gorge, Tunnel Creek and Windjana Gorge were all formed as a result of millions of years of river erosion.
It truly is worth staying at Fitzroy Crossing simply to see the spectacular gorge formations and the wildlife, fish and birds that occupy them. Bush walking is a great way to explore these wonders close up. Tunnel Stream is a naturally formed tunnel thru a limestone reef, being 750 metres long, 12 metres high and 15 metres wide. It is truly impressive as well as unique.
