What South Ronaldsay, Orkney Has To Offer The Tourist
South Ronaldsay is the closest Orkney island to Caithness, only six miles away across the Pentland Firth and connected to the Orkney Mainland by a series of wartime anti-submarine barriers. These link the island via Burray, Glimps Holm and Lamb Holm to Holm on the Orkney East Mainland. South Ronaldsay is a thriving island relying on fishing,livestock farming and tourism for the majority of its income.
The village of St. Margaret's Hope is Orkney's third largest settlement and boasts an excellent restaurant, two hotels, a backpackers' hostel, no less than three general stores and a nine hole golf course. The Hope is the embarkation point for the fast catamaran service across the Pentland Firth. Alternatively, in summer there is a footpassenger ferry at Burwick.
Though it is a small island, South Ron' boasts an awful lot to see. South Ronaldsay boasts two smiddy museums whilst there is a thriving fossil and vintage centre at Burray. The Tombs of the Eagles and Otters are located at the very southern end of the island and the former has its own museum/visitors' centre. Lovers of wartime history will appreciate the Barriers and the wartime batteries at South Cara and Hoxa Head.
Divers will love the barriers which enable shallow dives in crystal clear water on a myriad of blockship wrecks from two world wars as well as the barriers themselves which harbour an immense variety of life.
The range of marine and terrestrial habitats makes South Ronaldsay a great destination for bird watching. We have everything from wide, sandy bays with eelgrass to majestic cliffs and open moorland which, with our location on many migration routes will keep ornithologists happy year round.
Seals abound here and in winter you can see the pups of grey seals in the many geos around the island. It is often possible to watch basking sharks from the clifftops at Burwick in the late summer. A great way to stay on South Ronaldsay is to book a South Ronaldsay cottage. Orkney holiday homes enable you to enjoy the island at your own pace. A Orkney self-catering will allow you the space and privacy you need to truly unwind in these amazing surroundings.
