Holiday Fitzroy River Crossing
Heading due west from Kununurra and on the way to Broome, you'll come to the Fitzroy River and Fitzroy Stream Crossing. Once again you will be pleased you decided to travel with Campervan Hire Australia, because in and around this knackered tiny city are some impressive things to see. Fitzroy River Crossing is located in the western Kimberleys and is enclosed by rich pastoral land which in effect , are the floodplains of the Fitzroy Stream.
The city itself still retains some of the first buildings eg the police station and the old post office which has since then been converted into backpacker accommodation. The first causeway is also still there as is a small footbridge over Brooking Creek to the original graveyard. There's also an interesting avenue of boab trees in the town.
The city itself is a typical outback, bush city with it's own unique characteristics. If you stay for few days to explore the near by areas, there is the option to either camp or stay at the Fitzroy Stream Inn, or bunk in with the back-packers. The town site was chosen thanks to the proximity to the most acceptable place to ford the Fitzroy stream.
Things to see include the spectacular Geikie Gorge Countrywide Park which was chipped out by the Fitzroy River over 350 million years ago, thru a limestone reef in ancient times. It's been suggested that a 20 kilometre wide reef ran for more than 1,000 kilometres from Kununurra, north to Derby then around to Fitzroy Crossing. Geikie Gorge, Tunnel Stream and Windjana Gorge were all formed as a consequence of millions of years of brook erosion.
It truly is worth staying at Fitzroy Crossing simply to see the spectacular gorge formations and the wildlife, fish and birds that live in them. Bush walking is a good way to explore these wonders close up. Tunnel Stream is a naturally formed tunnel through a limestone reef, being 750 metres long, 12 metres high and 15 metres wide. It is truly impressive as well as unique.
