Locating the Best of Budget Dorms in Southeast Asia
When you are planning your journey around the Globe, selecting comfortable backpacker accommodation on a low budget may appear a daunting job. But different from the bed-ridden dorms and bug-infested hostels that form your worst fears, a little money can go a long way in Southeast Asia, if you know where to look! If you're prepared to grab your rucksack and head only a couple of minutes walk from the most popular 'backpacker areas' featured in the likes of the Lonely Planet, then low prices are easily found.
Prices vary considerably around the region. A basic room in Bangkok in the main visitor hub of the Khao San Road, will cost you about 300 baht (approx. GBP6 or USD9), and we are chatting few, if any comforts. However, move away from the main street and clean, the same basic room can be had for half this price.
If you head north from Bangkok to the less populated Chiang Rai, the same money can get you a multitude of 'flashpacker ' luxuries, from a pool to air conditioning and heaven forbid, even a hot shower!
Cambodia is less expensive, while you can expect to either do without some comforts or spend more money in the more touristy areas such as Koh Samui and Koh Phi Phi (Southern Thailand).
In Laos 150 baht will stretch surprisingly far, or you can save the pennies and go basic with a waterfront bamboo bungalow in which to rest your head.
But wherever in Southeast Asia you are staying, the worry can be removed by preparing beforehand. Head to an internet café and snap yourself up a bargain, especially around significant calandar events such as the Full Moon parties on Koh Phangan where prices inflate and places quickly fill up. Some kindly owners will even collect you upon your arrival, thus saving you tuk tuk fees, so it's totally worth being that little bit more prepared.
And besides, which sweaty back-packers really want to trudge around flicking through a battered travel guide having spent 24 hours on an overcrowded, cramped overnight bus?… not me!
