South Ronaldsay A Nature Lovers' Paradise
South Ronaldsay is the most southerly of the Orkney islands and is connected to the East Mainland of Orkney via a series of wartime anti-submarine Barriers called the Churchill Barriers. Three other islands form the chain, Burray, Glimps Holm and Lamb Holm. South Ronaldsay's economoy is based on fishing, farming (sheep and cattle) and tourism.
The picturesque village of St. Margaret's Hope has an excellent restaurant, a backpacker' hostel, a couple of hotels, three general stores and a nine hole golf course. The Hope is the embarkation point for the fast catamaran service across the Pentland Firth. In summer, passengers also use the footpassenger ferry from Burwick.
Though it is a small island, South Ron' boasts an awful lot to see. South Ronaldsay has two smiddy museums and Burray, just across the fourth Barrier has a wonderful Fossil & Vintage centre. The Tombs of the Eagles and Otters are located at the very southern end of the island and the former has its own museum/visitors' centre. If you like wartime history there is an impressive battery and controlled mine complex at Hoxa Head and another at South Kara.
Divers will love the barriers which enable shallow dives in crystal clear water on a myriad of blockship wrecks from two world wars as well as the barriers themselves which harbour an immense variety of life.
The great range of habitats makes for excellent bird watching. Sandy beaches, a wide shallow bay, steep cliffs, unimproved pasture and moorland, plus South Ronaldsay's location on many migration routes mean an ornithologist will never have a dull day here.
Seals abound here and in winter you can see the pups of grey seals in the many geos around the island. In late summer basking sharks frequent our waters and can often be seen from the clifftops at Burwick. A great way to stay on South Ronaldsay is to book a Orkney barn. Chalets on South Ronaldsay enable you to enjoy the island at your own pace. A South Ronaldsay holiday homes will allow you the space and privacy you need to truly unwind in these amazing surroundings.
