Locating the cheapest of Cheap Dorms in Southeast Asia
When you're planning your round the world adventure trip, finding comfortable backpacker accommodation on a tight budget can appear a daunting job. However, different from the bed-ridden dormitories and cockroach-infested hotels that form your worst fears, a little money can be stretched a long way in Southeast Asia, if you know where to look! If you are prepared to snatch your bag and head only a few minutes walk from the most highly recommended 'backpacker areas' featured in the likes of the Lonely Planet, then some great deals are easily found.
Costs vary considerably between countries. A basic room in Bangkok in the main tourist hub of the Khao San Road, will cost about 300 baht (approx. GBP6 or USD9), and we are chatting few, if any comforts. Get away from the main street and clean, the same basic room can be rented for 50% of this price.
If you head north from Bangkok to the less populated Chiang Rai, your 300 baht can get you a multitude of 'flashpacker ' luxuries, from a pool to air conditioning and heaven forbid, even a hot shower!
Cambodia is just as affordable, while you can expect to either do without some comforts or spend more money in the more touristy areas such as Koh Samui and Koh Phi Phi (Southern Thailand).
In Laos 150 baht will go a long way, or you can save the pennies and go basic with a riverside bamboo bungalow in which to rest your head.
But wherever in Southeast Asia you are staying, the uncertainty can be reduced by booking ahead. Head to an internet café and snap yourself up a bargain, particularly around popular calandar events such as the Full Moon parties on Koh Phangan where costs inflate and places fill up. Some kindly owners will even pick you up on arrival, thus sparing you the cost of a tuk tuk, so it's definitely worth being that little bit more prepared.
And besides, which sweaty backpacker really want to trudge around flicking through a battered guidebook having spent 24 hours on a crowded cramped overnight bus?… not me!
