Finding the Very best of Bargain Rooms in Southeast Asia
When planning your round the world adventure trip, selecting comfortable backpacker accommodation on a low budget may appear a daunting prospect. But different from the bed-ridden sleeping areas and bug-infested hotels that are the stuff of nightmares, a little money can be stretched a long way in Southeast Asia, if you just know where to look! If you're prepared to pick up your pack and head just a short walk from the most popular 'backpacker areas' featured in the likes of the Lonely Planet, then low prices are just waiting to be found.
Costs change considerably around the region. A no-frills room in Bangkok in the primary visitor hub of the Khao San Road, will cost you roughly 300 baht (approx. GBP6 or USD9), and we are talking few, if any comforts. Get away from the main street and clean, simple rooms can be rented for 50% of this cost.
Heading north from Bangkok to the less populated Chiang Rai, the same money can get you a multitude of 'flashpacker ' luxuries, from a pool to air conditioning and heaven forbid, even a heated shower!
Cambodia is just as affordable, while you can expect to either do without some comforts or spend more cash in the more touristy areas such as Koh Samui and Koh Phi Phi (Southern Thailand).
In Laos 150 baht will stretch surprisingly far, or you can save the pennies and go basic with a waterfront bamboo hut in which to rest your head.
But wherever in Southeast Asia you are staying, the stress can be reduced by preparing beforehand. Head to an internet café and snap yourself up a deal, particularly around major calandar events such as the Full Moon parties on Koh Phangan where costs inflate and places rapidly fill up. Some kindly owners will even pick you up on arrival, thus sparing you the cost of a tuk tuk, so it's definitely worth being that little bit more prepared.
And besides, which sweaty backpacker really want to traipse around flicking through a battered Lonely Planet having spent 24 hours on an overcrowded, cramped overnight bus?… not me!
