Locating the Best of Bargain Dorms in Southeast Asia
When planning your journey around the Globe, choosing comfortable backpacker accommodation on a tight budget may seem a difficult job. But far from the bed-ridden dorms and bug-infested hostels dreamt about only in nightmares, a little money can be stretched a long way in Southeast Asia, if you simply know where to look! If you're prepared to pick up your rucksack and head only a few minutes walk from the most highly recommended 'backpacker areas' featured in the likes of the Lonely Planet, then bargains are easily found.
Costs vary considerably between countries. A basic room in Bangkok in the main budget traveller of the Khao San Road, will set you back about 300 baht (approx. GBP6 or USD9), and we are chatting no frills. Look away from the main street and clean, the same basic room can be had for half this cost.
If you head north from Bangkok to the less populated Chiang Mai, the same money can get you a multitude of 'flashpacker ' luxuries, from a pool to air conditioning and heaven forbid, even a heated shower!
Cambodia is less expensive, while you can expect to either lower your standards or splash more cash in the more touristy areas such as Koh Samui and Koh Phi Phi (Southern Thailand).
In Laos 150 baht will go a long way, or you can save the pennies and go basic with a riverside bamboo bungalow for your stay.
But wherever in Southeast Asia you are staying, the uncertainty can be taken out of the process by planning ahead. Head to an internet café and snap yourself up a bargain, especially around significant calandar events such as the Full Moon parties on Koh Phangan where fees inflate and places rapidly fill up. Some kindly owners will even collect you upon your arrival, thus sparing you the cost of a tuk tuk, so it's definitely worth being that little bit more prepared.
And besides, which sweaty back-packers really want to drag themselves around flicking through a battered travel guide having spent 24 hours on a crowded cramped overnight bus?… not me!
