How to Get Rid of Common Sickness in Camping and Backpacking Trips
The World Health Organization recently reported that about half of the travelers suffer from diarrhea while on their way. Apart from this, the same organization links contaminated drinking water to 80% of travel diseases. This only means that travelers, like campers and hikers must take extra precaution especially with drinking water.
Backcountry waters are not safe to drink. There are around 90% of water sources in North America that are contaminated with common microbes like giardia and crystosporidia. These microbes cause “Beaver Fever”, a term that pertains to the effects of chronic diarrhea and vomiting. The good news is that these sicknesses can be avoided by treating the water first before drinking. Boiling, bleaching and iodine treatment can kill these microbes. You can also use a reliable water purifier to treat your drinking water.
Although there are several ways to treat your drinking water, most campers prefer to use water purifiers as they are lightweight and easy to use. Katadyn Hiker Pro water purifier for example can kill most drinking water microbes that cause diarrhea and other water-borne sickness. Unlike iodine and bleach, water filters do not leave unpleasant taste in your drinking water. Boiling your water is still the safest way but you have to carry the burden of bringing along boiling equipment for this purpose.
When you are on camping or backpacking adventure, it is always possible that you get dehydrated so you better bring with a bottle mineral water. Drink plenty of fluids as much as possible. Do not drink untreated water especially when you are taking medicines. Avoid drinking fruit juices with high sugar content because bacteria easily grow in them. Hot coffee and tea including beer and wine are safe to drink. Do not bathe in tropical surface water. Brush your teeth only with treated water. In case soap and water is not available to wash your hands, make sure you carry an alcohol-based hand gel.
Perishable food like meat and chicken are not advisable to be packed especially if you are camping for several days. If you prefer to eat meals with these ingredients, make sure that these foods are consumed immediately to avoid spoilage. Fruits are vegetables are safe to eat at the campsite but make sure to wash them with treated water. It is advisable that you wash them well and pack them in clean sealed containers before the trip. Canned and dried foods are preferred by most campers.
Always practice proper sanitation when you are on travel or camping. This is for your safety and the other campers too. Food and other waste materials should be separated and disposed properly. Clean towels should always be on your camping supplies list. Enjoy your camping and backpacking trip but make sure safety is your priority.
