Travel Safe with Proper Hygiene and Sanitation Practice
The World Health Organization recently reported that about half of the travelers suffer from diarrhea while on their way. Apart from this, the same organization links contaminated drinking water to 80% of travel diseases. This only means that travelers, like campers and hikers must take extra precaution especially with drinking water.
Backcountry waters are not safe to drink. There are around 90% of water sources in North America that are contaminated with common microbes like giardia and crystosporidia. These microbes cause “Beaver Fever”, a term that pertains to the effects of chronic diarrhea and vomiting. The good news is that these sicknesses can be avoided by treating the water first before drinking. Boiling, bleaching and iodine treatment can kill these microbes. You can also use a reliable water purifier to treat your drinking water.
If you are a light backpacker, it will be inconvenient for you to bring boiling equipment. Treating water with iodine, purification tablets and chlorine bleach will leave a chemical taste in the treated water. When you are on camping or backpacking adventure, it is always possible that you get dehydrated so you better bring with a bottle mineral water. Drink plenty of fluids as much as possible. If you plan to camp for several days, it is best that you bring canned and dried foods to avoid spoilage. If you prefer fresh produce, make sure to wash fruits and vegetables at home and then pack them in sealed clean container. Use treated water to wash cooking utensils and in washing your hands before eating. Food with meat, chicken or beef should be consumed at the first day of camping.
It is vital for campers and backpacker to prioritize safety at all times. In order to avoid getting sick, follow proper sanitation practices. It will be advantageous to bring few pieces of clean towels to dry your hands after washing. Be responsible enough to dispose your waste properly in favor of other campers and the environment.
