Backpacking or hiking activities will feel less comfortable if we bring too much stuff. In addition to the primary needs such as backpack bags and beverages, usually an backpaker must also bring other tools such as GPS. GPS is very necessary especially if we plan for the adventure in an area that still feels new to us. In these case, GPS navigator is surely useful so we don't get lost. In addition, GPS is usually also equipped with a compass, and it's helping our adventure such in the forest so we not lose of direction. In addition to carrying a GPS, there are times when we also want to take a picture of a place with a digital camera. It feels incomplete if we do not take photos of our journey. You can take photos for documentation or sell it on the internet for some bucks. With both these reasons, it means carrying a digital camera is a must.
However, as we said earlier, that bring too much stuff will disturb your comfort. We’re recommending you to only bring one solution but meet all of those needs.
That is Oregon 550T, a GPS products made by Garmin. From many sources, we found that this product is recommended by a lot of hiker and backpacker. However, sweet words from product advertisement are not guaranteeing you to get good quality product. So, let’s make own analysis.
Oregon 550T is a handled GPS tools that has several other features beside to its primary function as a GPS. Another feature is the built-in U.S. topographic maps, digital camera, Touch & Go, waterproof, changeable Micro SD Card, and many more. Okay, in terms of features, of course, we can find quickly that this product meets the needs that we stated at the beginning of the article. Those need is about GPS and digital cameras. But that’s not mean that we can conclude to buy this product.
A good GPS tools should be easy-to-use even by beginners.
A good camera should be able to provide high quality pictures.
Indeed, based on the product descriptions of this product, it is stated that this product has a camera resolution of 3.2 megapixels. But again, do not be too trusting with the ad.

- The GPS is easy to use and most of the menu items are pretty much self-explanatory.
- US built in Topo maps was a value added.. If you were to buy the more inexpensive 450T Series and have to buy the maps for various areas you could easily spend far more to have maps for the entire United States than what this device costs.
- As a backpacker, I found setting a route using my own waypoints to be a great asset. I've also used this GPS for geocaching and it is pretty accurate.
