Five Ways To Enjoy Backpacking In The Rain
If you are hiking in bad weather you will want to use a waterproof backpack, carry light weather-appropriate clothes, keep your other supplies dry, get out of waterlogged clothing quickly, and dry off with camp towels.
The weather can be unpredictable and can be any thing from beautiful, bright, sunny, dismal, gray or even drizzly. To make the most of your outdoor adventure be sure to plain for all weather conditions, including rain. These backpacking tips will help you to have fun even on a rainy day:
Be certain you are using a waterproof backpack
The most important item needed is a waterproof backpack. Different varieties of waterproof backpacks can be found in your local camping and specialty stores. If you are considering a backpack for an outdoor trek and need to know what size would be best, consider factors like how long you’ll be gone, what you’ll be doing, what possessions you’ll need, and just how much you can carry at one time. Be prepared for heavy rains, with a raincoat and tarp, by choosing one with easy to access outer pockets and comfortable straps to carry the additional supplies.
Remember to pack some lightweight rain-proof gear
Make sure you also pack rain gear with you to get on with your adventure even when it rains. Find some that are lightweight and just the right size.
* Rain coat–-You should definitely get a raincoat. Select a type that can go into the backpack, or find a poncho. The length should be long enough to cover your pants, but not so big that it will interfere with your ability to hike. The best place for your raincoat is in the outer pocket of your backpack so you can grab it quickly without opening your entire pack and soaking the contents within.
* Lightweight shoes–-Lightweight hiking shoes are preferable when backpacking because they easily dry and will help you avoid blisters. Make sure they have non-slip soles, too.
* Quick-drying clothes–-Wear clothes that are quick-drying. Avoid cotton shirts, denim jeans, and cotton socks because they can easily absorb sweat, will get soaked and heavy when it rains, and will take a long time to dry out when wet. All in all, wool is simply a better material to use. Be sure to pack some extra clothes.
* Rain tarp-–A rain tarp, also called a rain fly, can be used as a temporary shelter you can attach to the trees. Keep a small size one in an easy to access place on your bag, so that you can get it as and when heavy rains start.
Cover other items in the exposed pockets of your bag
There could be other items in the outer pocket of your bag that needs to be protected from the rain, such as your sleeping bag. To keep it dry and warm, roll up your sleeping bag and cover it using either the pouch that came with it or a waterproof case.
Get rid of those wet clothes immediately
To keep from getting sick, or developing hypothermia, change out of your wet clothes immediately when the rain stops. Change into warm new clothes as soon as you can and hang your wet clothes to dry.
Camp towels can keep you drier than cotton ones
While cotton towels are known for their ability to absorb liquids, they’re not all that practical for hiking or backpacking. Aside from being bulky, they are very heavy when wet. Instead, use a camp towel which can absorb well and dry up easily and is available in most specialty shops.
As long as you have the right gear prepared for rain and any weather, you are sure to have a rewarding outdoor adventure. With these tips, you are ready to go on an adventure that not even the rain can spoil.
