The World Health Organization recently reported that about half of the travelers suffer from diarrhea while on their way. Apart from this, the same organization links contaminated drinking water to 80% of travel diseases. This only means that travelers, like campers and hikers must take extra precaution especially with drinking water.
Get rid of common drinking water microbes like giardia and cryptosporidia by treating your water before drinking. It is reported that most waters in the wilderness of North America are contaminated with these microbes. You can avoid diarrhea and vomiting by carefully treating your drinking water with bleaching and iodine tablets or by boiling the water. You can also bring along with a portable water purifier.
Although there are several ways to treat your drinking water, most campers prefer to use water purifiers as they are lightweight and easy to use. Katadyn Hiker water purifier for example can kill most drinking water microbes that cause diarrhea and other water-borne sickness. Unlike iodine and bleach, water filters do not leave unpleasant taste in your drinking water. Boiling your water is still the safest way but you have to carry the burden of bringing along boiling equipment for this purpose.
Keep yourself fully hydrated by drinking a lot of water. It is recommended that you bring bottled mineral water. You can drink hot coffee and tea including beer and wine as these are safe. For hand washing purposes, it would be better if you carry a bottle of hand sanitizer in cases that water is not available. Treat water first before using it for taking medicines, for bathing, brushing your teeth and food preparation.
If you plan to camp for several days, it is best that you bring canned and dried foods to avoid spoilage. If you prefer fresh produce, make sure to wash fruits and vegetables at home and then pack them in sealed clean container. Use treated water to wash cooking utensils and in washing your hands before eating. Food with meat, chicken or beef should be consumed at the first day of camping.
Always practice proper sanitation when you are on travel or camping. This is for your safety and the other campers too. Food and other waste materials should be separated and disposed properly. Clean towels should always be on your camping supplies list. Enjoy your camping and backpacking trip but make sure safety is your priority.
