Proper Care and Maintenance Tips for Your Sleeping Bags
Your sleeping bag can make or break your camping adventure. If you carefully chose your sleeping bag along with your other camping gear, you should therefore put the same effort in taking care of this camping buddy. In order to maximize the years of its service, take note of valuable tips on how to use, store, wash and dry your sleeping bag.
Give your sleeping bag enough time to expand before you use it. Laying the bag for no less than an hour before bedtime will allow it perform better because the insulation capacity has been maximized. Let the sleeping bag dry in the sun after a camping trip. This way, moisture and smell stuck in the bag will eventually evaporate.
It is imperative that you know how to take care of your bag’s zipper. Make sure you purchase a sleeping bag built with excellent zipper system. This is one of the best features of Marmot Helium EQ sleeping bag. An improvised yet effective means of repairing the zipper is by rubbing a pencil on the zipper teeth. It is best that you purchase only a sleeping bag with self-repairing coil zipper and zipper baffle.
As with hand washing, use only warm water and mild soap or specialty bag cleaning solution. Using a commercial heavy duty, front-loading, tumble-type machine, wash the sleeping bag and set the water temperature on “cool” and the cycle on “gentle”. Dry the sleeping bag over a clothesline. Do not ring out the bag. Use your hand to press excess water out. You may also choose to load it in a commercial type dryer but make sure to set in on “air only” setting.
Maximize your sleeping bags years of service by storing it properly. Always allow enough time for the sleeping bag to air before stuffing it in a breathable sack. As much as possible, store it loosely in a large stuff sack. Avoid compressing your sleeping bag as this will eventually damage the filling and thus losing its loft. It is better that you just hang it by the foot in your closet or simply laying it loose on a shelf. If you prefer to store in a sack, make sure it is completely dry.
