Sarah Shourd Sole Hiker Freed By Iran
A location composed of Turkey, Iraq and Iran called Kurdistan had three individuals hiking there in 2009. The name originated from the Kurds which is the majority of individuals who live there. Iranian law enforcement took all hikers into custody and accused them of espionage and of being spies. Authorities keep changing their minds by at first saying they'd release one, then not, and then actually did release a hiker, Sarah Shourd. Iranian law enforcement tried to get the United States, who said no, to pay for her release with $500,000. They didn't release all of the backpackers though. One of them is her fiancé in there. Hiking with intent to spy
Sarah Shourd, Shane Bauer and Josh Fattal all work in the Middle East as they were captured. Bauer is the one Shourd is engaged to. Kurdistan was the choice they made to escape at because in the southern parts of Iraq, it is one of the most free. While hiking outside of Zalem, a village in Iraqi Kurdistan, the hikers were detained by the Iranian national police, according to The Nation. Though the border is not very easily identified, locals within the area claim that Iranian forces regularly enter Iraq, where they lack jurisdiction.
One hiker freed
The Iranian government said it would release Shourd to the United States government. Of course, this would require $500,000 bail. After making the statement, the government changed its mind in Iran. The, says CNN, Sarah Shourd was announced to be released on bail because of health reasons. Washington and Tehran technically have no relations, and the Swiss have been acting as liaison since 1979. Supposedly, a banking account in Oman is where the bail came from. Shane Bauer and Josh Fattal weren't as lucky. They are nevertheless in Iranian custody.
No way to prove there was espionage
There was never a cross to the Iranian border by the backpackers. This comes from numerous sources. People from the area where they were captured have repeatedly said that Iranian police and intelligence operatives openly and notoriously cross the border and detain people. A simple accidental trespassing charge should take 10 minutes in front of any judge. Seems like like the only reason the government would keep the people detained would be for political reasons.
