Fitzroy River Crossing Road Trip
Heading to the west from Kununurra and on the way to Broome, you may come to the Fitzroy Stream and Fitzroy Stream Crossing. Once more you will be pleased you made a decision to travel with Campervan Hire Australia, because in and around this tired little town are some impressive things to see. Fitzroy Stream Crossing is found in the western Kimberleys and is surrounded by rich pastoral land which in effect , are the floodplains of the Fitzroy River.
The city itself still retains some of the original buildings such as the police station and the old post office which has after that been converted into hiker accommodation. The original causeway is also still there as is a tiny footbridge over Brooking Creek to the original cemetery. There is also a fascinating avenue of boab trees in the town.
The town itself is a typical outback, bush town with it's own unique traits. If you stay for few days to explore the close by areas, there's the choice to either camp or stay at the Fitzroy Brook Inn, or bunk in with the back-packers. The city site was selected due to the proximity to the most acceptable place to ford the Fitzroy stream.
Things to see include the impressive Geikie Gorge National Park which was sliced out by the Fitzroy Brook over 350 million years ago, thru a limestone reef in ancient times. It has been advised that a 20 kilometre wide reef ran for over 1,000 kilometres from Kununurra, north to Derby then around to Fitzroy Crossing. Geikie Gorge, Tunnel Creek and Windjana Gorge were all formed as a consequence of millions of years of brook erosion.
It really is worth staying at Fitzroy Crossing just to see the spectacular gorge formations and the wildlife, fish and birds that live in them. Bush walking is a good way to explore these wonders up close. Tunnel Stream is a naturally formed tunnel through a limestone reef, being 750 metres long, 12 metres high and 15 metres wide. It is actually spectacular as well as unique.
