Finding the Very best of Cheap Accommodation in Southeast Asia
When you are planning your journey around the Globe, choosing comfortable backpacker accommodation on a low budget can appear a difficult prospect. But unlike the bed-ridden dorms and bug-infested hostels that are the stuff of nightmares, a little money goes a long way in Southeast Asia, if you simply know where to look! If you are prepared to pick up your bag and head only a short walk from the recommended 'backpacker areas' featured in the likes of the Lonely Planet, then some great deals are just waiting to be found.
Costs vary significantly around the region. A no-frills room in Bangkok in the main visitor hub of the Khao San Road, will cost about 300 baht (approx. GBP6 or USD9), and we are speaking no frills. Look away from the main street and clean, the same basic room can be found for 50% of this price.
Heading north from Bangkok to the less populated Chiang Rai, that 300 baht can get you a multitude of 'flashpacker ' luxuries, from a pool to air conditioning and heaven forbid, even a heated shower!
Cambodia is less expensive, while you can expect to either do without some comforts or splash more cash in the more touristy areas such as Koh Samui and Koh Phi Phi (Southern Thailand).
In Laos 150 baht will go a long way, or you can save the pennies and go basic with a waterfront bamboo bungalow in which to rest your head.
But wherever in Southeast Asia you are staying, the worry can be reduced by preparing beforehand. Head to an internet café and snap yourself up a bargain, especially around major calandar events such as the Full Moon parties on Koh Phangan where costs inflate and places rapidly fill up. Some kindly owners will even collect you upon your arrival, thus saving you the cost of a tuk tuk, so it's definitely worth being that little bit more prepared.
And besides, which sweaty backpackers really want to drag themselves around flicking through a battered guidebook having spent 24 hours on an overcrowded, cramped overnight bus?… not me!
