Locating the Best of Bargain Rooms in Southeast Asia
When planning your journey around the Globe, selecting comfortable backpacker accommodation on a tight budget may appear a difficult task. However, far from the bed-ridden dorms and bug-infested hotels that form your worst fears, a little money can go a long way in Southeast Asia, if you simply know where to look! If you're prepared to grab your pack and head only a 1 or 2 minutes walk from the most popular 'backpacker areas' featured in the likes of the Lonely Planet, then bargains are easily found.
Prices vary greatly around the region. A basic room in Bangkok in the main budget traveller of the Khao San Road, will set you back about 300 baht (approx. GBP6 or USD9), and we're speaking basic. Get away from the main street and clean, the same basic room can be had for 50% of this price.
Heading north from Bangkok to the less populated Chiang Mai, your 300 baht can get you a multitude of 'flashpacker ' luxuries, from a pool to air conditioning and heaven forbid, even a heated shower!
Cambodia is equally cheap, while you can expect to either do without some comforts or splash more money in the more touristy areas like Koh Samui and Koh Phi Phi (Southern Thailand).
In Laos 150 baht will stretch surprisingly far, or you can save the pennies and go basic with a riverside bamboo bungalow for your stay.
But wherever in Southeast Asia you are staying, the uncertainty can be reduced by preparing beforehand. Head to an internet café and snap yourself up a deal, especially around significant calandar events such as the Full Moon parties on Koh Phangan where prices inflate and places quickly fill up. Some kindly owners will even collect you upon your arrival, thus saving you tuk tuk fees, so it's definitely worth being that little bit more prepared.
And besides, which sweaty backpackers really want to traipse around flicking through a battered guidebook having spent 24 hours on a crowded cramped overnight bus?… not me!
