Iran Releases Sarah Shourd But Holds Some Other Backpackers
In July of 2009, three individuals were hiking through Kurdistan, a region comprising parts of Turkey, Iraq and Iran. The title originated from the Kurds which is the majority of people who live there. Iranian Law enforcement decided it was appropriate to take these hikers into custody. They were accused of espionage and of spying for other countries. Authorities keep changing their minds by originally saying they'd release one, then not, and then really did release a hiker, Shourd. A $500,000 request for her release was made. Of course the United States of America said no way. Her fiancé was hiking with her and is still in custody.
Hiking with intent to spy
All three captured hikers, Sarah Shourd, Shane Bauer and Josh Fattal, work within the Middle East. Bauer is also Shourd's fiancé. They picked Kurdistan as a getaway site because it is mostly free of the sectarian conflicts within the southern parts of Iraq. While hiking outside of Zalem, a village in Iraqi Kurdistan, the hikers were detained by the Iranian national police, according to The Nation. Though the border is not effortlessly identified, locals in the area claim that Iranian forces regularly enter Iraq, where they lack jurisdiction.
One hiker is home free
The Iranian government said it would release Sarah Shourd to the United States government. Of course, this would require $500,000 bail. The Iranian government changed its mind right after. Then, it was announced that Sarah Shourd was being released, on bail, for health reasons, according to CNN. Washington and Tehran technically have no relations, and also the Swiss have been acting as liaison since 1979. The bail was supposedly deposited into a banking account in Oman. Iran is nevertheless holding Shane Bauer and Josh Fattal in custody.
No case for espionage
Numerous sources have reported that the hikers never even crossed to the Iranian border. People from the area where they were captured have repeatedly said that Iranian police and intelligence operatives openly and notoriously cross the border and detain people. The case should only take a few minutes. Any judge can do a trespassing charge in about 10 minutes. There is little evidence the detention of these people was anything other than politically motivated.
