Ways To Spoil Yourself With Luxury Train Travel
Luxury train travel is something completely unique. Flying or driving by bus or car can simply not be compared to it, neither can boat travel. There is simply no other way in which you can experience the wonders of another part of the world in so much comfort and style than with a luxury train trip.
Much can and has been written about many great railway journeys. The trip from London to Istanbul has fascinated travelers for many years. The incredibly train travel which Paul Theroux describes in such vivid detail in his book The Great Railway Bazaar is alas no longer possible. Today we want to talk about another trip though - one that will often take your breath away with the sheer natural beauty of the terrain it passes through.
This luxury train travel route is starts in Cape Town, South Africa and ends in the city of Dar es Salaam in Tanzania. On the way it passes majestic mountains, pristine vineyards, the wide open plains of the Karoo, the bushveld of Africa where deer and wild lions are still roaming, magnificent rivers, thundering waterfalls and African cities that pulsate with life. It's a once in a lifetime experience - something that you will reminisce about for many years to come.
Cape Town, where your trip starts, is considered by many to be one of the most beautiful cities on earth. On top of that it's by no means a boring place - there's enough to see and do here to keep you occupied for weeks. Accommodation options vary from some of the best hotels in the world to basic backpackers hostels.
End your first day by sipping a sundowner at the V &A Waterfront; the next day ride to the summit of Table Mountain in a cable car, go on wine tasting tours or see the Peninsula from a helicopter. Or simply relax in the pedestrianized St George's Mall area with a drink and watch the world go by.
Once your trip starts, you will be spoilt beyond your wildest dreams. Your compartment will have a full-sized comfortable bed and all modern conveniences. Wood paneling and soft lighting create an old wold charm. When dinner time arrives, you will enjoy fine food and drink while watching the African scenery pass by. By the time it gets dark, you will be in the Karoo - a land of endless plains with only the flickering lights of distant farms breaking the darkness.
Once you get hooked on luxury train travel, it will be hard to revert to another form of travel again. The good news is that the Cape Town to Dar es Salaam route will most probably be extended all the way to Cairo in the near future. This will open up vast parts of Africa to tourists who would never have considered visiting it before.
