Locating the Best of Bargain Rooms in Southeast Asia
When you are planning your round the world adventure trip, selecting comfortable backpacker accommodation on a low budget may be a daunting prospect. But different from the bed-ridden dormitories and cockroach-infested hostels that form your worst fears, a little money can go a long way in Southeast Asia, if you simply know where to look! If you are prepared to grab your rucksack and head only a short walk from the most highly recommended 'backpacker areas' featured in the likes of the Lonely Planet, then some great deals are just waiting to be found.
Costs vary considerably between countries. A no-frills room in Bangkok in the main budget traveller of the Khao San Road, will cost about 300 baht (approx. GBP6 or USD9), and we are speaking few, if any comforts. Get away from the main street and clean, simple rooms can be had for half this price.
Heading north from Bangkok to the less populated Chiang Mai, that 300 baht can get you a multitude of 'flashpacker ' luxuries, from a pool to air conditioning and heaven forbid, even a hot shower!
Cambodia is equally cheap, while you can expect to either lower your standards or spend more cash in the more touristy areas like Koh Samui and Koh Phi Phi (Southern Thailand).
In Laos 150 baht will stretch surprisingly far, or you can save the pennies and go basic with a waterfront bamboo hut in which to rest your head.
But wherever in Southeast Asia you are staying, the stress can be removed by preparing beforehand. Head to an internet café and snap yourself up a bargain, particularly around major calandar events such as the Full Moon parties on Koh Phangan where prices inflate and places quickly fill up. Some kindly owners will even pick you up on arrival, thus sparing you the cost of a tuk tuk, so it's totally worth being that little bit more prepared.
And besides, which sweaty backpacker really want to traipse around flicking through a battered travel guide having spent 24 hours on an overcrowded, cramped overnight bus?… not me!
