Locating the cheapest of Cheap Hostels in Southeast Asia
When preparing your journey of a lifetime around the world, selecting comfortable backpacker accommodation on a low budget may appear a difficult task. However, different from the bed-ridden dormitories and cockroach-infested hotels that are the stuff of nightmares, a little money goes a long way in Southeast Asia, if you just know where to look! If you are prepared to grab your bag and head just a 1 or 2 minutes walk from the recommended 'backpacker areas' featured in the likes of the Lonely Planet, then low prices are easily found.
Prices change significantly across borders. A basic room in Bangkok in the primary backpacker centre of the Khao San Road, will cost circa 300 baht (approx. GBP6 or USD9), and we're talking no frills. Get away from the main street and clean, the same basic room can be rented for half this price.
Heading north from Bangkok to the less populated Chiang Rai, your 300 baht can get you a multitude of 'flashpacker ' luxuries, from a pool to air conditioning and heaven forbid, even a hot shower!
Cambodia is less costly, while you can expect to either lower your standards or drop more cash in the more touristy areas like Koh Samui and Koh Phi Phi (Southern Thailand).
In Laos 150 baht will stretch surprisingly far, or you can save the pennies and go basic with a riverside bamboo bungalow for your stay.
But wherever in Southeast Asia you are staying, the uncertainty can be removed by planning ahead. Head to an internet café and snap yourself up a bargain, particularly around major calandar events such as the Full Moon parties on Koh Phangan where costs inflate and places fill up. Some kindly owners will even pick you up on arrival, thus sparing you the cost of a tuk tuk, so it's totally worth being that little bit more prepared.
And besides, which sweaty backpacker really want to drag themselves around flicking through a battered Lonely Planet having spent 24 hours on a crowded cramped overnight bus?… not me!
