Finding the cheapest of Bargain Hostels in Southeast Asia
When preparing your journey around the Globe, choosing comfortable backpacker accommodation on a limited budget may be a daunting prospect. However, different from the bed-ridden dorms and cockroach-infested hotels that are the stuff of nightmares, a little money can go a long way in Southeast Asia, if you just know where to look! If you are prepared to pick up your bag and head just a few minutes walk from the most highly recommended 'backpacker areas' featured in the likes of the Lonely Planet, then bargains are easily found.
Prices change greatly across borders. A basic room in Bangkok in the main budget traveller of the Khao San Road, will set you back around 300 baht (approx. GBP6 or USD9), and we are speaking basic. However, move away from the main street and clean, the same basic room can be had for half this price.
If you head north from Bangkok to the less populated Chiang Rai, that 300 baht can get you a multitude of 'flashpacker ' luxuries, from a pool to air conditioning and heaven forbid, even a hot shower!
Cambodia is less costly, while you can expect to either do without some comforts or spend more money in the more touristy areas like Koh Samui and Koh Phi Phi (Southern Thailand).
In Laos 150 baht will stretch surprisingly far, or you can save the pennies and go basic with a waterfront bamboo bungalow for your stay.
But wherever in Southeast Asia you are staying, the stress can be removed by booking ahead. Head to an internet café and snap yourself up a bargain, particularly around significant calandar events such as the Full Moon parties on Koh Phangan where prices inflate and places quickly fill up. Some kindly owners will even collect you upon your arrival, thus saving you the cost of a tuk tuk, so it's definitely worth being that little bit more prepared.
And besides, which sweaty backpacker really want to traipse around flicking through a battered Lonely Planet having spent 24 hours on a crowded cramped overnight bus?… not me!
