Tips for Proper Use of Sleeping Bags
Together with your tent and other camping materials, your sleeping bag is your reliable partner in your camping adventure. Like all other camping gear and equipment your camping pal deserves proper care and maintenance in order to maximize its purpose. From usage, storage, washing and drying, every backpacker should know how to take care of their sleeping bags.
Give your sleeping bag enough time to expand before you use it. Laying the bag for no less than an hour before bedtime will allow it perform better because the insulation capacity has been maximized. Let the sleeping bag dry in the sun after a camping trip. This way, moisture and smell stuck in the bag will eventually evaporate.
It is recommended that you choose a sleeping bag with excellent zipper system, an important feature present in Marmot Helium 15 Sleeping bags. Sleeping bag with two zippers meeting at the middle has more chances of getting stuck so make sure you balance their workload. Use each zipper equally. You may use duct tape to seal broken zipper or patch a tear in your sleeping bag. To avoid these problems, choose a sleeping bag with anti-zipper snagging feature. Always check for actual customer reviews for these important features.
Unless you went out for a month-long camping, it is not necessary for your sleeping bag to be washed after they were used. Nonetheless, you still have to make sure that you follow strictly the directions for washing. Make sure to use only mild soap in to wash sleeping bags made from down materials. Use only lukewarm water and as much as possible use bathtub or something that you can completely submerge the sleeping bag in water. Rinse thoroughly until all water and soap are completely removed. Let the sleeping bag dry in the sun. Make sure you shake it occasionally to help remove water faster.
Maximize your sleeping bags years of service by storing it properly. Always allow enough time for the sleeping bag to air before stuffing it in a breathable sack. As much as possible, store it loosely in a large stuff sack. Avoid compressing your sleeping bag as this will eventually damage the filling and thus losing its loft. It is better that you just hang it by the foot in your closet or simply laying it loose on a shelf. If you prefer to store in a sack, make sure it is completely dry.
