How Sleeping Bag Works
If this is your first time to purchase a sleeping bag for your outdoor activity, it would be helpful for you to have a look at how your sleeping pal is built and designed for your comfort. Regardless if you are out for camping, backpacking or hiking, sleeping bag is as necessity.
The sleeping bag’s performance is affected by three basic factors: environment, insulation and construction. As a rule of thumb, quilted sleeping bags perform better than stitched counterpart because of its ability to trap more dead air inside the bag. One of the most popular in the quilted genre is Marmot Atom bag .
Depending on your preferences, you have the option to buy a cocoon or rectangular shaped sleeping bags. They also come in different sizes, fit and weight designed according to the common needs of most campers. Most manufacturers offer both regular and long sizes and some have designs especially for women and children.
The season ratings of sleeping bags should be basic knowledge to campers. This rating serves as a guide on what season will the sleeping bag perform well. Like camping tents, they are also categorized as one-season (summer), two-season (late spring to autumn), three-season (spring, summer and autumn) and four-season (low level used all year round). Summer sleeping bags are rated for 35°F or higher, three-season camping for 10°-35°, winter sleeping bags for -10° to +10° and extreme cold bags for -10° and below.
The materials used to construct the sleeping bag also define its quality. Manufacturers use different shell, liner and fill materials for each type of bag. The most common shell materials are nylon, polyester and taffeta. They are cheaper than synthetic materials but are less durable yet extremely breathable. Like canvass, these are recommended for car camping and general camping during warmer seasons. Microfiber, Gore-Tex and DryLoft are ultra light materials used in sleeping bags for cold weather camping.
Stitching is a possible weak point in sleeping bag because this can be an entry point of moisture or cold air into the bag, thus losing its insulating power which makes quilted sleeping bags performs better. Miscellaneous features of sleeping bags include zippers, pillow pockets, hoods and collar including sleeping pad connections that also contribute to its insulating power. The best choice will always be the one that will fit your needs and preference.
