South Ronaldsay, An Island Retreat
South Ronaldsay is the closest Orkney island to Caithness, only six miles away across the Pentland Firth and connected to the Orkney Mainland by a series of wartime anti-submarine barriers. Three other islands form the chain, Burray, Glimps Holm and Lamb Holm. South Ronaldsay gets most of its income from farming, fishing and tourism.
The village of St. Margaret's Hope is Orkney's third largest settlement and boasts an excellent restaurant, two hotels, a backpackers' hostel, no less than three general stores and a nine hole golf course. The Hope is the embarkation point for the fast catamaran service across the Pentland Firth. Alternatively, in summer there is a footpassenger ferry at Burwick.
Though it is a small island, South Ron' boasts an awful lot to see. South Ronaldsay boasts two smiddy museums whilst there is a thriving fossil and vintage centre at Burray. Two famous tombs are located at the south end of the island, The Tomb of the Eagles with its own museum and the more recently discovered Tomb of the Otters. If you like wartime history there is an impressive battery and controlled mine complex at Hoxa Head and another at South Kara.
Divers will love the barriers which enable shallow dives in crystal clear water on a myriad of blockship wrecks from two world wars as well as the barriers themselves which harbour an immense variety of life.
The great range of habitats makes for excellent bird watching. We have everything from wide, sandy bays with eelgrass to majestic cliffs and open moorland which, with our location on many migration routes will keep ornithologists happy year round.
In winter grey seals pup here whilst the harbour seals pup in summer - both share haulouts at various locations around the island. In late summer basking sharks frequent our waters and can often be seen from the clifftops at Burwick. A great way to stay on South Ronaldsay is to book a South Ronaldsay cottage. Cottages on South Ronaldsay enable you to enjoy the island at your own pace. A South Ronaldsay holiday homes will allow you the space and privacy you need to truly unwind in these amazing surroundings.
