Commercial Mass Ecotourism Destroys Ecology
The tourism business is worth about US$900 billion now and has a growth of 4 percent every year. Ecotourism has an impressive annual growth of 15 percent within the tourism sector. The pristine and uninhabited habitats are the major targets of ecotourism. These habitats are the coasts, estuaries, the plains and the hills. Educating the traveler, promoting conservation and organizing support to conservation are the major objectives of ecotourism. Ecotourism however faces a number of problems. Many natural habitats have been designated as conservation areas by the governments. However many of these areas are also caught up in conflicts as local communities allege that their traditional rights are denied once these areas are designated as conservation areas. There are also land use conflicts. Though these conservation areas are to be regulated, economic interests and pressures of tourism open up the place indiscriminately. In many areas, too many lodges, resorts and hotels are constructed. Too many vehicles drive through the place. Local communities are shooed away and their traditional and customary rights are restricted or completed denied. Governments often turn a blind eye in order to promote tourism business. Motorcycles and conducted tours inside parks disrupt the peace of the environment and the movement of wildlife. The need to maintain sophisticated and expensive facilities require generation of revenue from tourists. More and more tourists are welcomed adding to the woes of environment. Garbage and waste generation as well as pollution add to the problems. 167
On the contrary the impact on ecology is low or minimal when ecotourism is conducted responsibly. Environmental awareness with the aim of supporting conservation is the basis of responsible ecotourism. Small groups frequent a location which has either no facilities or minimal facilities. Such tourists typically camp in the location amidst the natural surroundings. They come with camping equipments that they can carry with them in their backpack. Conservation requires that the ecosystem is protected by sustainable use of its biodiversity. The cultures of the local communities should be valued. Ecotourism should also benefit the local communities.
