Mulligan And Me In Hawaii
In addition to its lovely weather and year round temperate temperatures, it is no wonder that Hawaii is home to some of the finest golfing in the country. For golfers and non-golfers alike, the towns of Kihei and Princeville offer fun in the sun and plenty of possibilities to explore the great outdoors. Golf courses, the volcano parks, and plenty of beaches make this part of the world a leading vacation spot for adventure vacationers.
Kihei is a town on Maui’s southern shore. It is located on the leeward side of the volcano called Haleakala. The local weather is arid and the town receives no more than 10 inches of rain per year, making it an perfect spot for the year round golfer. Beach vacations that take in a round or two of golf with a view of the ocean is easily a great afternoon.
Some of the better known courses in the region include the Maui Elleair Golf Club. This is a course which has 6,404 yards of golf from the longest tees for a par of 71. It was designed by Bill Newis and opened in 1987. The Wailea Golf Club is another destination for the avid golfer. This is an 18 hole course which features 6,758 yards of golf from the longest tees for a par of 72. It was designed by Arthur Jack Snyder and opened in 1971. The Makena Golf Courses are also worth a round or two, as they accept steady positive testimonials and take advantage of the relatively arid weather conditions on the leeward side of the volcano.
For persons interested in romantic travel and outdoor adventure while exploring Kihei, the Haleakala National Park is at your doorstep. This is a 30,183 acre National Park which surrounds the crater of the volcano. 24,719 acres of the park are specified as wilds and are accessible to hikers and backpackers. The park includes the summit depression, Kipahulu Valley on the southeast, and a variety of secluded streams and pools. The park extends to the shore. For those interested in hiking, there are two main trails leading into Haleakala from the top. These are known as Sliding Sands Trail and Halemauu Trail.
It’s important to mention a few items about the trails and park for the volcano adventurer. The high altitude at the summit of the volcano means that some of the hiking can be more arduous than you may imagine. Temperatures are cool, but thirst is a genuine possibility.
On the north shore of the island of Kaua’I is Princeville, a small town that truly loves its golf. Princeville features two world class championship golf courses called Prince Golf Course and Makai Golf Course. Collectively they comprise 45 holes of superbly designed golf. The courses have earned Golf Digest’s score of number one in the State of Hawaii. Golf Digest also ranked the courses as number 14 in its list of America’s Best Resort Golf Courses and number thirty nine in America’s Top 100 Greatest Courses.
