Finding the Very best of Cheap Accommodation in Southeast Asia
When preparing your round the world adventure trip, finding comfortable backpacker accommodation on a restricted budget may be a difficult prospect. However, unlike the bed-ridden dorms and bug-infested hostels that form your worst fears, a little money goes a long way in Southeast Asia, if you just know where to look! If you are prepared to pick up your rucksack and head only a 1 or 2 minutes walk from the recommended 'backpacker areas' featured in the likes of the Lonely Planet, then bargains are there for the asking.
Costs vary significantly across borders. A simple room in Bangkok in the primary budget traveller of the Khao San Road, will cost you circa 300 baht (approx. GBP6 or USD9), and we're speaking no frills. Get away from the main street and clean, the same basic room can be rented for 50% of this price.
If you head north from Bangkok to the less populated Chiang Mai, that same cost can get you a multitude of 'flashpacker ' luxuries, from a pool to air conditioning and heaven forbid, even a heated shower!
Cambodia is less costly, while you can expect to either lower your standards or splash more money in the more touristy areas such as Koh Samui and Koh Phi Phi (Southern Thailand).
In Laos 150 baht will stretch surprisingly far, or you can save the pennies and go basic with a waterfront bamboo hut in which to rest your head.
But wherever in Southeast Asia you are staying, the doubt can be removed by booking ahead. Head to an internet café and snap yourself up a bargain, especially around popular calandar events such as the Full Moon parties on Koh Phangan where costs inflate and places fill up. Some kindly owners will even pick you up on arrival, thus sparing you tuk tuk fees, so it's totally worth being that little bit more prepared.
And besides, which sweaty back-packers really want to trudge around flicking through a battered Lonely Planet having spent 24 hours on a crowded cramped overnight bus?… not me!

A backpack fitted with pocket(s) that are suspended on the wearer"s front side (chest) and loaded in such a way that the load in the front and the load in the back are about equal is called a bodypack. The majority of the load on a bodypack is carried by the hips.
