Abandon Your Career Goals And Settle For Less!
We spend much of our life working, and whilst we do not live to work, it is certainly an integral part of our lives. Ever since I discovered Football Manager, I harboured strong ambitions to become a football writer after developing a keen interest in this field. My best laid career plans vanished on leaving university and realising the difficulties such a path posed. Everything I had done had been focused around this ambition, from undertaking work experience on the sports desk at a national newspaper to reading English at degree level. Instead, I wafted through a few pointless roles ultimately ending up, like the majority of graduates now, at a call centre. I have been fortunate in that I have realised my ambition of writing, if not for a living as an intense hobby, as well as developing a career in insurance, a field I ended up in purely by accident. But then, how many of those employed can honestly say they have achieved the career goals they laid out at school?
My personal advice, cynical as I may be, is to reject the clich©d aims that many of us set as adolescents, and look to a field where many will ignore as a potential forum for a career. I was unfortunate in that I graduated from university in a year steeped in recession, where graduates had the lowest employment rate ever recorded. However, nowadays many people at university needn't have gone, and it seems now to be a lifestyle choice rather than a drive to study. If insurance sounds too dull (believe me it is), a job in the airline industry can be both personally and financially rewarding. For me it didn't suit, but living near an airport I have endured several experiences of working alongside stressed holidaymakers and suave travelling businessmen. Indeed, working in Heathrow's uncomfortable Terminal 4, I was charged with checking in passengers by a handling agent a variety of airlines. Thailand holidays were the worst, stranded as I was in a job with red-eye shifts watching backpackers embark on an exciting adventure. 3am starts were accepted practice, so maintaining a normal social life was extremely hard. I was often intrigued by those embarking on China holidays, as it struck me as an odd destination, though I am reliably informed that this "Tiger Economy" is a rapidly up and coming holiday destination for adventurous tourists.
The airport wasn't for me, as the shift pattern and sight of other people embarking on luxurious trips further fuelled my cynicism. Barbados holidays used to cheer me considerably, with the natives on their way home constantly in good spirits and often with a cheery word to say. While at the airport, I also worked for a short while parking cars. This was a fabulous experience, allowing an 18 year old to sit behind the wheel of some very plush cars, and adding to my ambition for a successful career so that one day rather than just park a Porsche 911, I'd be driving one.
