Visitors who come to Nepal nowadays still come to “get high”, but the phrase refers more to high altitude treks than attitude, and hash browns rather than hash brownies.
A popular tourist destination has been the lakeside resort of Pokhara with stunning views of the spectacular Annapurna Range. Although long on the Lonely Planet trail, it was not until recently that decent, first class digs of international standards became available. Almost ten years ago saw the opening of the Fulbari, this is a brand new luxurious resort sprawling over 150 acres, and Tiger Mountain, joining Shangri-La Village as upmarket choices. As a matter of fact, many people who visit Nepal stay at the lkeside, which unfortunately has now become spoiled by over-commercialisation catering to the muesli set.
Pokhara climate, despite its closer proximity to the Himalayan peaks, is considerably warmer, sunnier and the air fresher and cleaner than Kathmandu. Like Thamel, Pokhara has a glut of budget backpacker accommodation, and many lodges have been built by ex-Gurkha servicemen and Thakalis. Restaurants are everywhere along the lakeside. The cuisine, however, is undistinguished. One exception is Mike’s Restaurant inside the Fewa Hotel compound directly on the lakeside. With its terrace a few feet from the shore, it feels more like Switzerland than Nepal.
If you want to treks in Annapurna region, Pokhara is the main base. The most popular treks are the so-called “Tea House” treks which traverse well-travelled areas, this spot always become overcrowded in high-season. Actually the “tea houses” are small, basic, lodges offering accommodation and food for travellers. Providing both food and shelter, they thus require minimal equipment and, being economical, they are popular with backpackers and budget tourists.
Jomsom is the destination of a classic tea house trek on the busy trade route, once used by salt traders, leading to the Kingdom of Lo Manthang on the Tibet border. This area boasts some of the best tea houses owned by the enterprising ethnic Thakalis of the Kaligandaki Valley. The trek begins in Pokhara and passes terraced rice fields and rhododendron forest before descending to Tatopani. The trail traverses the Kaligandaki Valley, waterfalls, and Thakali villages, with spectacular views along the way of the Annapurna massif and Dhaulagiri.
