Green Hotels On The Great Ocean Road
The Great Ocean Road is all about getting back to nature and appreciating the beauty in your natural surroundings, which is one reason why eco accommodation suits the area so well. Going green doesn't have to be more expensive, there are numerous Australia travel deals to be had on the Great Ocean Road.
Melbourne is the perfect starting point for guests travelling down the Great Ocean Road. The vibrant city has a number of different options for green accommodation and while there are plenty of Australia travel deals to be had inside the city centre, the two YHA Youth Hostels that boast green credentials and run entirely from solar power are amongst the best in terms of value.
In Melbourne's city centre, the Alto Hotel on Bourke has won many carbon concious awards. There is even free parking for guests that turn up in carbon or electric vehicles. The Alto has managed to restrict their guests carbon footprint to 13.5kg per person, way ahead of the 26kg set as a guideline by the sustainable tourism council.
Melbourne is less than a two hour drive away from the start of the Great Ocean Road. Plus you’ll find a number of hotels along the route that boast green credentials. The Great Ocean Ecolodge is a must for guests looking for luxurious green accommodation, while budget travellers can find a YHA hostel in Apollo Bay that runs entirely from solar energy. Guests at this hotel can experience kangaroo and koala in the wild, while gourmet meals at the hotel are locally sourced.
Victoria's only purpose built walking lodge can be seen in Johanna and visitors can design packages from a mix including photographic workshops, volunteering opportunities and guided tours. Relax back at the hotel with a warming foot-spa while you're waiting for your meal to be cooked from locally sourced ingredients. Bothfeet lodge was created as a haven for walkers and measures have been taken to reduce the need for power generated cooling and heating. Guests can volunteer in local community initiatives during their stay and these include seed-collecting, propagation of species and weeding, while the tours also help local community outcomes.
