Holiday Fitzroy River Crossing
Heading due west from Kununurra and on the way to Broome, you may come to the Fitzroy River and Fitzroy River Crossing. Once again you'll be pleased you made a decision to go with Campervan Hire Australia, because in and around this knackered tiny town are some impressive things to see. Fitzroy River Crossing is found in the western Kimberleys and is surrounded by rich pastoral land which in effect , are the floodplains of the Fitzroy Brook.
The city itself still keeps some of the original buildings like the police station and the old post office which has after that been converted into back-packer accommodation. The first causeway is also still there as is a little footbridge over Brooking Creek to the first graveyard. There is also an interesting avenue of boab trees in the city.
The city itself is a common outback, bush town with it's own unique characteristics. If you stay for few days to explore the close by areas, there's the option to either camp or stay at the Fitzroy River Hotel, or bunk in with the backpackers. The town site was selected thanks to the proximity to the best place to ford the Fitzroy river.
Things to see include the impressive Geikie Gorge National Park which was chipped out by the Fitzroy River over 350 million years back, thru a limestone reef in ancient times. It's been suggested that a 20 kilometre wide reef ran for more than 1,000 kilometres from Kununurra, north to Derby then around to Fitzroy Crossing. Geikie Gorge, Tunnel Stream and Windjana Gorge were all formed as a consequence of millions of years of stream erosion.
It truly is worth staying at Fitzroy Crossing just to see the impressive gorge formations and the wildlife, fish and birds that live in them. Bush walking is a good way to explore these wonders close. Tunnel Stream is a naturally formed tunnel thru a limestone reef, being 750 metres long, 12 metres high and 15 metres wide. It is truly spectacular as well as unique.
